We have all heard it many times before – Time is Money but have you ever stopped to truly think about what this means for you in your quest for success and achievement? Time is money – literally. You can place a value to every minute of your day…hmmm.
Here’s another way to make this a reality…I want you to pick up a piece of paper and a pen right now. Start by writing down your total monthly net salary-the amount that goes into your account and budget as income. For the business owner, you can estimate your monthly income from your business. Now let’s calculate how much time in a month you spend earning this money…calculate the number of hours in a month you spend working. Here is where I will painfully challenge you to be realistic…many of us assume an 8 hour workday when at times it’s less or more…be honest with yourself (I promise this is between you and me) and write down how many hours in a month you spend doing NOTHING BUT WORK. Dividing the top figure of your monthly income by your total monthly hours will now give you your hourly earnings.
Stop for a minute and look at the value attached to your time. Even more important, think about the time you spend in traffic on the way to and from work, the time you spend chatting online or catching up with someone when you’re at the office and even the time you may spend on face book, everyone’s latest time addiction. If this time could be better served towards your success goals then consider this as money down the drain …suddenly you can start to see that the old saying about time and money is quite realistic.
I’m not here to chastise you on time or lecture age old principles on time management…I’m here to challenge you to ‘steal’ back some of your lost time and use it as an advantage towards becoming an achiever. If you spend too much time in traffic, steal back this time by making it useful; listen to an audio book now and then or a lecture series that will add value to your profession or business. You can read a book once in a while during your lunch hour. More importantly, spend the time for work actually working and you’ll notice that this alone sets you ahead of your colleagues since you’ll manage to meet your daily and weekly objectives or at least be ahead of a lot of people.
Lastly, if your earnings per hour are not looking too exciting then you can start to think about how to increase this amount by dedicating some of your time to activities that can increase your time value (your value) such as training classes or entrepreneurial ventures. That’s enough of your time taken by me – your ‘time is money challenge’ begins now!
